Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has named the newly completed 72 Metro Housing Estate in Maiduguri after Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima. The announcement was made during a grand commissioning ceremony held in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Governor Zulum also revealed that the Njimtilo 500 Housing Units have been named after Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, honoring his contributions to governance and leadership. In a similar vein, Shehu Sanda Kura Road was renamed to commemorate the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Elkanemi, for his steadfast service to the state.

During his speech, Governor Zulum highlighted the significance of these projects in addressing housing shortages and enhancing the quality of life for residents. The Kashim Shettima Housing Estate will primarily cater to military officers, security personnel, and federal workers in Borno, providing much-needed accommodation.

The Mai Mala Buni 500 Housing Units are set to house 210 police officers currently residing in Metro Police Barracks. Their relocation will free up land for the construction of a state-of-the-art International Conference Centre, further boosting the state’s infrastructure.

Governor Zulum also showcased other transformative projects, including the Borno Express Flyover, which he described as an “iconic structure” poised to revolutionize transportation and reduce travel time within the state. He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to urban renewal and rural development.

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State expressed gratitude for the honor and commended Governor Zulum’s efforts to rebuild and modernize Borno. Highlighting the shared culture and traditions between the two states, Buni reaffirmed their joint commitment to recovering from the impacts of the Boko Haram insurgency.

In his address, Governor Buni also spotlighted Yobe State’s achievements, including investments in education, healthcare, and agriculture. He emphasized a multi-billion-naira agricultural program and a N2.93 billion empowerment initiative aimed at uplifting vulnerable groups and small businesses.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone in the rebuilding and modernization efforts of Borno and its neighboring states, with the renamed landmarks serving as enduring symbols of leadership and progress.
