Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has vowed to rebuild and expand the state’s permanent National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp, a move set to transform the welfare and training of corps members in the state.

Governor Zulum made the announcement on Friday while receiving Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, and his management team at the Government House in Maiduguri.

For over a decade, Borno’s corps members have faced uncertainty, with the state’s NYSC orientation camp shut down for 12 years due to security concerns. In 2023, the scheme resumed operations at Umar Mustapha Elkanemi Arabic School, a temporary site.

However, Zulum emphasized the urgent need for a dedicated facility, promising to fast-track the construction of a state-of-the-art permanent camp that would accommodate more corps members and enhance their overall experience.

“The Deputy Chief of Staff and Chairman of the NYSC governing board should immediately commence construction and expand accommodation. The scheme is currently using a school, but soon, the school management may need the space back. The earlier we start, the better,” the governor declared.

Zulum also commended medical corps members for their contributions to healthcare in Borno and called for more STEM graduates—particularly specialists in physics, mathematics, and English—to help boost the state’s education system. He expressed appreciation to the NYSC leadership for reinstating the orientation camp, acknowledging that it had significantly eased the hardship faced by corps members who previously had to travel to other states for training.

Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, in his remarks, praised Borno’s commitment to the NYSC scheme and reassured corps members of their safety and well-being in the state. “I must say that corps members are in good hands. The support they are receiving in Borno has been tremendous,” he noted.

Ahmed highlighted Zulum’s contributions, including special allowances for medical corps members, feeding support, and the provision of Hilux vehicles to the NYSC state office. He also urged corps members to remain in Borno and contribute to its development, describing it as a way to give back to a government that has shown unwavering support for their welfare.

With Zulum’s commitment to rapid infrastructure development, the long-awaited permanent NYSC camp in Borno is set to become a reality, ensuring that corps members have a safe and conducive environment for their orientation and service year.
