Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched crackdown on social vices, with the inauguration of a high-powered committee aimed at curbing anti-social vices in Maiduguri and across the state.
The committee, which comprised community leaders, law enforcement agencies, and security personnel, were tasked with the responsibility of addressing issues such as drug abuse, youth restiveness, political thuggery, and violent crimes.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Governor Zulum decried the alarming surge in criminal activities, warning that the trend, if unchecked, could worsen the already fragile security landscape of the state.
“The increasing cases of criminality, thuggery, theft, armed robbery are deeply concerning. Prostitution and gangsterism are also on the rise.
Just a few days ago, people were killed near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Many parts of Maiduguri are now occupied by hoodlums,” the governor stated.

The committee is expected to carry out community outreach, enforce laws against offenders, and raise awareness on the dangers of social vices. Governor Zulum emphasized that preventing a slide into insurgency is paramount and warned that failure to act could have dire consequences.
Chairing the newly formed committee is the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Hauwa Abubakar.
In her remarks, she thanked the governor for his trust and pledged that the committee would live up to expectations.
