Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has delivered a stern admonition to transport unions in the state.
Affected by the warning are the Road Transport Workers Union of Nigeria (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and Clearance Agents Association.
He cautioned them to adhere strictly to load restriction laws or face severe penalties, including imprisonment.
Governor Zulum conveyed this message during a meeting with the leadership of transport unions in Maiduguri yesterday held at the council chamber of the government house.
Stressing the significance of complying with load restrictions mandated by government transportation regulations, the governor announced plans to submit a bill to the State House of Assembly for the review of existing road and transportation laws.
The proposed amendments, according to him, aim to introduce explicit and stringent penalties for those who violate load restrictions.

In an effort to enforce these regulations, Governor Zulum directed the installation of weighbridges at strategic locations, ensuring that owners and operators of heavy trucks strictly adhere to load restrictions while traversing highways.
Simultaneously, the governor ordered the Ministry of Works and Housing to expedite the completion of the ongoing trailer park project in Maiduguri.
Once finalized, the trailer park,.he said, will play a pivotal role in enforcing the state’s transport laws, preventing trailers and heavy-loaded vehicles from entering the city center.
Governor Zulum emphasized that these measures are crucial for safeguarding the state’s road infrastructure, ultimately reducing the financial burden of maintenance and preserving public resources.
