Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has commissioned a fully remodelled Second Chance School for vulnerable girls and women in Biu Local Government Area of the state.

The newly inaugurated school is designed to provide adult women who either missed formal education or dropped out due to social and economic challenges with an opportunity to acquire education and skills that will enable them to become self-reliant. The curriculum focuses on skills acquisition, digital literacy, as well as basic reading, writing and numeracy.

With the commissioning of the Biu centre, the Zulum administration has now established three Second Chance Schools across Borno State, complementing existing centres in Maiduguri and Bama.

Speaking, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering women and vulnerable groups through education and economic opportunities, particularly in communities recovering from years of insurgency.

Meanwhile, governor Zulum has disbursed N1 billion to small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) across five local government areas in southern Borno. The beneficiary councils include Biu, Hawul, Shani, Bayo and Kwaya-Kusar. The financial intervention is aimed at boosting entrepreneurship, strengthening local businesses and enhancing economic sustainability at the grassroots.

The governor explained that supporting SMEs is critical to post-insurgency recovery, noting that access to capital would help stimulate economic activities and promote self-reliance among residents.

In a related development, Zulum ordered the immediate employment of 200 youths from Biu Local Government Area as part of efforts to curb youth restrictiveness and promote social stability.

After commissioning the school, the governor visited the Biu Specialist Hospital, where he announced the immediate and automatic employment of volunteer health workers who have been rendering services at the facility.

Zulum also inspected the ongoing construction of a 100-unit teachers’ housing estate in Biu town, describing the project as part of the state government’s strategy to attract and retain qualified teachers in public schools.

Additionally, the governor directed the immediate commencement of rehabilitation works on the Borno State Hotel Annexe in Biu, in further demonstration of his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development in the area.
