As the world marks World Food Day 2025, the Niger State government has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to achieve lasting food security and agricultural sustainability across Nigeria.

Speaking from Minna, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Matthew Ahmed, urged individuals, communities, and institutions to work “hand in hand” to build a resilient food system capable of feeding the population while safeguarding the environment. This year’s global theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and Better Future,” underscores the importance of collective action and innovation in addressing hunger and malnutrition.

Ahmed commended Governor Umaru Bago’s administration for implementing agricultural reforms designed to make Niger a leading hub for food production. He noted that the state government is expanding mechanized farming, supporting smallholder farmers, and boosting irrigation systems to increase productivity. The administration is also promoting agro-processing industries and strengthening the agricultural value chain to reduce post-harvest losses and create more jobs for rural communities.

According to Ahmed, Niger State is investing heavily in rural infrastructure to ensure farmers can easily transport their produce to markets. He added that the government is working closely with national and international partners, research institutions, and private investors to modernize farming methods and encourage sustainable practices.

“Food security is everyone’s responsibility,” he said. “It demands the active participation of farmers, investors, researchers, and communities. When we join forces, we can end hunger, empower farmers, and build a system that feeds both our people and our future generations.”

Ahmed reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting farmers with better tools, training, and access to credit while aligning Niger’s agricultural policies with global initiatives to eradicate hunger and poverty.

With climate change, population growth, and economic challenges threatening food supply chains across Nigeria, the Niger State government’s renewed call for collective action comes at a critical time, signaling the need for unity, innovation, and accountability in the nation’s pursuit of food security.
