Trade Union Congress TUC, Cross River State chapter has raised alarm over the numbers of check-points, legal and illegal from Calabar to Ogoja.
In an address by comrade Monday Ogbodum, State Chairman Trade Union Congress on the occasion of the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration, this has seriously affected commuters.
Ogbodum, said that the cost of transportation of goods and services has increased astronomically thereby resulting in a higher cost of living.
He also complained that some of governor Basset Otu’s Aides/Appointees are cankerworms that eat the fabrics and are seriously creating and dragging the image of the government.
He said that issues like but not limited to; government to implement promotion as soon as the promotion was released but surprised to note that promotion implementation had been stopped since December, 2024.
The backlog of civil and public servants promoted are piling-up, the TUC chairman stated, adding that sooner or later, the state will record again another epidemic of lack of promotions implementation.
He appealed to the governor to direct the full implementation of all outstanding promotions and to further direct that promotions henceforth be implemented as soon as promotion is granted and letters issued.

This according to him is to avoid the problem of arrears because promotions and its implementation is one of the catalysts that drives and energies the workforce towards service delivery.
Speaking, Governor Bassey Edet Otu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, dignity, and advancement of workers in Cross River State, describing them as the “heartbeat of the state” and the engine that powers its progress.
Speaking through his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, the Governor praised the resilience, dedication, and sacrifices of workers across all sectors.
Governor Otu, while acknowledging the struggles and expectations of the state’s workforce, assured that their calls for better welfare, timely promotions, reliable pensions, and fair treatment have not gone unheard.
“You have not asked for handouts; you have asked for fairness. You have not demanded privilege; you have asked for recognition. And I give you my solemn assurance—you are heard, you are seen, you matter,” he declared.
He highlighted key interventions made by his administration since assuming office to include the regular payment of salaries, the release of N10 billion for backlog of gratuities, implementation of the new national minimum wage, among others.
