The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) had advocated for an inclusive workplaces for everyone, especially for people living with HIV.

She said that Workers’ Day is an annual event that celebrates the hard work of people around the world and raises awareness about the need for better working conditions, fair pay, and social justice. It reminds us of the importance of supporting all workers, regardless of their health status.

Ilori emphasized that workplaces should be more than just places where people are productive—they should be communities where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. She urged employers, labour unions, and government agencies to focus on raising awareness about HIV, providing education, and enforcing rules that prevent discrimination in the workplace.

In Nigeria, nearly two million people are living with HIV, and many of them play important roles in the workforce. Unfortunately, these individuals often face not just health challenges but also stigma and discrimination because of their condition.

Ilori highlighted that no one should be denied a job, treated unfairly, or missed out on opportunities because of their HIV status. She reminded everyone that health rights are basic human rights.

She called on all parties involved to work together to ensure that every worker is treated with respect and fairness, no matter their health situation.

This year, the theme for Workers’ Day is “Reclaiming the Civic Space Amid Economic Hardship.”
