Media personality Daddy Freeze has weighed in on the growing debate comparing Grammy-winning singer Wizkid to the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, explaining that both artists represent different forms of influence.
The comments come amid a public exchange between Wizkid and Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, who criticised fans of the contemporary star for drawing parallels between his father and Wizkid.
Seun Kuti had openly challenged Wizkid’s supporters for equating the Afrobeat legend with the modern Afrobeats icon.
Wizkid later responded by dismissing Seun’s criticism and asserting that he had surpassed Fela’s legacy.
Reacting to the controversy, Daddy Freeze said such comparisons were misplaced, stressing that Fela’s impact went far beyond music and was rooted in his lifelong resistance to political oppression.

He asserted that Fela used his art as a tool for activism, repeatedly confronting authorities, enduring arrests, and making personal sacrifices in the fight for social justice and freedom.
Daddy Freeze noted that Fela’s legacy was defined by courage, advocacy, and a willingness to risk everything for the causes he believed in, qualities that distinguished him as more than just a musician.
“Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and actively challenge the government, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela,” Daddy Freeze said.
“Fela was not a troublemaker; he was a freedom fighter. His music and activism were inseparable, and he went to prison fighting for the rights of the people.”
