Delta State Governor, Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborewori has announced that Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, will be renamed “Southern University” as part of an effort to broaden its academic scope and accreditation.
The Governor stated during a courtesy visit from the Isoko Church Leaders Forum (ICLF), led by Bishop Jonathan Aruakpor, at Government House in Asaba, saying, “We are transforming the institution to remove previous limitations and introduce more diverse courses.”
Oborewori emphasized that the renaming is part of a larger initiative to make Southern University a hub for specialized learning and to expand course offerings.
He said the state is building the faculty of health science which is nearing completion in the campus.
He highlighted that these advancements aim to serve not only the university’s students but also to support healthcare in the wider Delta community.
He also noted that his administration is committed to delivering quality infrastructure and has already launched several road projects, including the first and second phases of the Emevor road, and recently awarded the Olomoro/Igbide road.
To ensure high standards, he outlined that the government is actively inspecting contractors to prevent any compromise on construction quality.
Responding to the ICLF’s concerns, the Governor reassured the delegation that his administration is dedicated to the fair and equitable distribution of state resources.
Speaking further, Oborewori pointed to the state’s early adoption of the new minimum wage, which has since been extended to local government employees.
He called for the continued prayers of religious leaders, emphasizing the importance of spiritual support for a peaceful and progressive Delta State.

Earlier the Isoko Church Leaders Forum (ICLF), has commended Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s accomplishments and commitment to unity, development, and peace in the state.
Chairman of the Forum, Bishop Jonathan Aruakpor, who spoke on its behalf praised the Governor’s progress in infrastructure, noting key road projects such as the Emevor road and Olomoro/Igbide road, which aim to enhance connectivity and improve daily life in Isoko land.
Addressing the Governor, the ICLF encouraged a continued focus on utilizing the state’s natural resources, specifically suggesting that the substantial natural gas reserves in Isoko land be harnessed for power generation which according to him would lead to more reliable power, drive business growth, and improve the quality of life for the communities closest to these resources.
The ICLF concluded by offering their prayers and support for Governor Oborevwori’s administration, expressing hope for a peaceful and prosperous tenure. Bishop Aruakpor assured the Governor that the faith community would continue to play its role as an ally, fostering unity and stability across Delta State.
