Bayo Bashir Ojulari, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), is a highly respected engineer with decades of experience in petroleum, process, and production engineering.
Before his latest appointment, Ojulari served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company. Under his leadership, Renaissance spearheaded a historic $2.4 billion acquisition of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Ojulari’s career began at Elf Aquitaine, where he made history as the first Nigerian process engineer at the company. In 1991, he joined Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), setting the stage for a remarkable career spanning several continents.
A native of Kwara State, Ojulari is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied Mechanical Engineering from 1985 to 1989. His expertise and contributions to the field earned him a Fellowship with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). Additionally, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s engineering community, serving as Chairman and a Board of Trustees member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE Nigeria Council) from 1998 to 1999.

Ojulari held various leadership positions across Europe and the Middle East, specializing in petroleum, process, and production engineering, as well as health and safety management. His strategic insights and technical prowess led to his appointment as Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) in November 2015. During this time, he also held the position of General Manager, Deepwater, overseeing critical projects in onshore and offshore petroleum engineering, well engineering, and project integration.
He served on the board of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) before retiring from Shell in July 2021. After leaving Shell, he became Chairman of BAT Advisory & Energy Company, further cementing his reputation as a key figure in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
With his extensive experience and track record of success, Ojulari’s leadership at NNPC is expected to bring strategic transformation to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
