The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) have reinstated examination centres in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, returning them to their original locations in Dille, Mousa, and Lassa.

The move follows a directive by the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, aimed at easing the burden previously faced by students and parents who had to travel long distances to access examination centres due to the security crisis that once plagued the state.

In response to the governor’s order, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, constituted a ministerial committee to oversee the process.

The committee which was chaired by Abubakar Tijjani, the Special Adviser on Education to the governor, with support from the Education Research Council, swiftly engaged stakeholders, including WAEC and NECO officials, security agencies, and school principals from the affected communities.

Following a series of meetings, a consensus was reached to return the centres to their pre-insurgency status.

Support from the Chairman of Askira-Uba Local Government Council, Abubakar Mazhinyi, played a key role in facilitating the transition.

He pledged logistics, accommodation, and security to ensure the smooth reactivation of the centres.

According to the state ministry of education, the return of the examination centres is a direct outcome of the committee’s efforts and the unwavering commitment of the state government.

In a formal statement, Alhaji Suleman Abba Sheriff, Director of the Education Resource Centre, emphasized that no individual or organisation outside the appointed committee and the Askira-Uba Local Government Area leadership was responsible for this achievement.

“The successes recorded are the result of the directive and leadership of His Excellency, Babagana Zulum, and the diligent work of the ministerial committee led by Abubakar Tijjani,” the statement read.

The reinstatement of the exam centres marks another step forward in the educational recovery and rebuilding process in post-conflict Borno State.
