The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service has impounded over 200 unroadworthy vehicles, in an operation aimed at enhancing road safety across the state.

This measure was announced in a statement on Sunday, May 4, by the Director of Vehicle Inspection Service, Akin-George Fashola, alongside the Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola.

Fashola elaborated on the critical nature of this operation, highlighting its role in reducing the alarming number of road accidents attributed to unroadworthy vehicles, particularly those utilized for public transport.

“The operation is not restricted to private vehicles alone, as is commonly believed, but extends to all categories of vehicles contributing to the state’s transport ecosystem,” he said.

The director stressed that the initiative is not limited to private vehicles; it encompasses a wide range of transport types integral to Lagos’ bustling transportation system.

According to him, a considerable number of the vehicles confiscated during the operation were commercial mini-buses, specifically the widely used Danfo and Korope buses, which are often packed with commuters.

Fashola urged all vehicle owners, especially those intending to operate their vehicles for commercial purposes, to prioritize safety and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.

He recommended that vehicle owners seek inspection at one of the vehicle inspection service offices before commencing business operations, thereby ensuring their vehicles comply with established safety standards and regulations.

The director reassured residents that the vehicle inspection service is committed to maintaining rigorous inspections and a vigilant approach towards unsafe vehicles, with the overarching goal of making Lagos roads safer and improving the overall transportation landscape in the city.

This initiative is part of a larger strategy to foster public confidence in the safety of the transportation network and reduce the risks associated with poorly maintained vehicles.
