Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions Rivers United have, against Gateway United, recorded their second draw in the ValueJet Cup 2022.

The Pride of Rivers, who are yet to break even in their second match after playing a goalless draw against Kwara United at the Remo Stars Stadium, still found it difficult to break even.

Despite dominating the opening stages of the match, the NPFL champions were blunt to get one past the Gateway goalie including a 20-minute off-target freekick by Farouk Mohammed.

Still forcing its way to break the resilient Gateway United, Paul Acquah won a freekick in a dangerous spot but Ekeocha Chukwudi’s effort was deflected for a corner kick in the 22nd minute.

Stanley Eguma’s side had tried to lead the scoreline before halftime but were denied on several attempts.

After the break, coach Eguma made substitutions 7 minutes into the second half with Nyima Nwagua and Malachi Ohawume coming in for Adebayo Olaolu and Igbudu Alfar.

In the 64th minute, further substitutions were made with Bolaji Sakin and Azeez Godswill replacing Paul Acquah and Chigonum Ihunda but Gateway United were firm to allay any threat from the NPFL champions till the game ended in a barren draw.

Following the result, the Pride of Rivers have only earned two points in Group B and will have Ottasolo FC to contend with in their final group match.
