The United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) has pledged stronger support to strengthen collaboration with Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), praising its operational successes and promising increased support in the ongoing fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

This assurance was delivered during a courtesy visit to NDLEA’s national headquarters in Abuja on Monday, April 28, 2025, by INL Director in Nigeria, Ms. Candace Spradley, alongside her colleague Ms. Ada Aki. According to a statement released by the agency’s media and advocacy officer, BabaFemi Femi, the meeting reinforced the growing partnership between the two agencies.

Ms. Spradley emphasized that the U.S. government remains deeply invested in curbing narcotics trafficking, particularly the opioid crisis, and views Nigeria as a crucial ally in this global battle. She expressed readiness to enhance the current collaboration, stressing that any specific needs identified by the NDLEA would be met with eager support from the United States.

Responding to the U.S. delegation, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its strong commitment to eradicating drug abuse and illicit trafficking across Nigeria. Marwa also recalled former U.S. President Donald Trump’s dedicated stance on the global drug crisis, acknowledging that international support remains critical to sustaining momentum.

Marwa praised the significant role INL has played in elevating NDLEA’s status as Africa’s leading anti-narcotics agency. However, he noted that more support is essential to consolidate and expand the agency’s gains. Highlighting urgent needs, he appealed for operational vehicles, forensic laboratory equipment, specialized training for forensic analysts, advanced tools for cyberspace and cryptocurrency investigations, and drug testing kits to boost field operations.

The visit by INL officials not only strengthens ties between Nigeria and the United States in the war against drugs but also signals a new phase of intensified cooperation, ensuring that NDLEA continues to break new ground in safeguarding Nigeria from the scourge of substance abuse.
