A male student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on Thursday lost his life after reportedly jumped from a three-storey building, near Royal Kitchen Junction in Ifite-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Eyewitnesses say the unidentified student plunged from the balcony of a private lodge near the university, allegedly under the influence of an unknown substance suspected to be mkpurummiri (methamphetamine).
“We suddenly heard a loud thud yesterday evening and rushed to the scene. We found the young man lying in a pool of blood, critically injured,” one resident near the scene told reporters.
The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was later confirmed dead despite frantic efforts to save him.

Speaking on the incident, the Chief Safety Officer of UNIZIK, Mr. Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the development on Friday. “We are still investigating to be sure of what happened, how it happened, and the proper identity of the victim. The incident occurred at a private lodge outside the university campus, and we do not control who is admitted into such lodges,” he stated.
Police sources confirmed that the deceased’s family is yet to be officially notified, while an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
