The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has firmly dismissed reports circulating online that suggest delays in reimbursing students who paid their obligatory fees prior to the disbursement of student loans under the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund) scheme.

In an official statement issued on Thursday, the institution’s Head of Communication Unit, Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, clarified the situation, noting that the university has been working diligently to ensure that all eligible students receive their refunds in a timely and transparent manner.

She emphasized that contrary to the misleading information being shared across social media platforms and other unofficial sources, the refund process is ongoing and in line with the established verification protocols.

“Refunds are typically processed after reconciliation and verification with NELFund,” Alaga-Ibraheem explained. “So far, three tranches of NELFund loans have been received by the university, and beneficiaries across the first two batches have been successfully reimbursed.”

She added that the third tranche of the student loan, which was received towards the end of April 2025, is currently being processed. According to her, the university is in the process of collating and reconciling students’ payment details to ensure accurate refunds.

This reconciliation is necessary to confirm that all reimbursements correspond correctly with NELFund’s approved lists and the students’ financial records.

The spokesperson reiterated that the university management remains fully committed to its core institutional values, which include transparency, accountability, and a strong focus on student-centered service delivery.

She assured all concerned students and parents that the institution is prioritizing the matter and is actively engaged with NELFund to ensure that the reimbursement process is completed without unnecessary delays.

“The university management remains committed to its core values of transparency, accountability, and student-centred service delivery. We implore our students to take advantage of the NELFund loan facility and to contact the NELFund help desk at our Student Affairs Division for prompt assistance and resolution on any complaint,” she stated.

UNILAG also encouraged students who may be experiencing delays or have unresolved issues related to the loan refund to visit the NELFund help desk situated at the Student Affairs Division. There, they can receive up-to-date information and personal assistance with their specific cases. The institution believes that this proactive communication channel will help mitigate confusion and reduce the spread of misinformation.

The NELFund loan initiative is a government-backed scheme aimed at increasing access to higher education by offering financial assistance to eligible Nigerian students. Since its launch, the program has gained traction across several federal institutions, including UNILAG, providing much-needed support for tuition and associated academic fees.
