Olorogun Jaro Egbo, Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, has issued a strong appeal to the youth in the region, urging them to avoid the dangers of drug abuse during this festive period. In a press release dated December 17, 2024, the council boss emphasized the importance of living a drug-free life, not only to ensure personal well-being but also to contribute positively to the future of the community.

Egbo expressed deep concern over the rising tide of drug abuse among young people, warning that it negatively affects their physical and mental health and diminishes their potential to make meaningful contributions to society. He pointed out that the consequences of drug addiction go beyond individual harm, posing a serious threat to the collective progress of the community.

“The Christmas season is a time of reflection and celebration, but it is also an opportunity for young people to make resolutions that will positively shape their futures,” the chairman said. He encouraged the youth to focus on academic achievement, personal development, and productive activities that can build a brighter tomorrow. “Education is the foundation for success, and I urge all our youth to prioritize their studies and stay away from drugs,” Egbo added.

In his statement, Egbo also called on parents and guardians to take an active role in the upbringing of their children. He described them as the first line of defense against negative influences, stressing the importance of guiding young people and protecting them from the dangers of substance abuse.

“Insecurity, a persistent challenge in our society, is often fueled by drug abuse and delinquent behavior among the youth,” Egbo said. “Parents and guardians must be vigilant in nurturing their children with discipline and positive values. By doing so, we can work together to eliminate insecurity and create a safer, more prosperous community.”

The chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development through educational initiatives and the creation of an environment that fosters growth and opportunity for young people. He called on religious bodies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to collaborate in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of education.
