Ahead of the forthcoming Local Government Party Congress, the Ughelli North Local Government Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has adopted Mr. Lucky Ofomukoro as its consensus chairman, a move party leaders say is aimed at ensuring unity, stability and a rancour-free congress.
Ofomukoro emerged as the preferred candidate after extensive consultations involving party leaders, elders and stakeholders across the local government area. The chairmanship position was zoned to Agbarha-Otor Ward, where leaders unanimously endorsed him in line with existing zoning arrangements.
The decision was taken at a well-attended Ughelli North APC Leaders and Stakeholders’ Meeting held on Sunday at the Local Government Council Secretariat, Ughelli. The meeting formed part of ongoing consultations designed to strengthen internal cohesion and avert disputes ahead of the party congress.
Presiding over the meeting, Vice Chairman of the APC Ughelli North Leaders Council, Chief Fred Majemite, described the process that produced Ofomukoro as transparent, inclusive and driven by consensus. He said party leaders and elders deliberately adopted zoning and consultation to protect the unity of the APC in the area.
Majemite explained that reconciliation committees had been constituted to address lingering disagreements, revealing that close to 90 percent of issues across the wards had already been resolved. He assured party members that remaining concerns would be swiftly handled to guarantee a smooth congress at both ward and local government levels.
Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Chief Jaro Egbo, also praised the leadership of the party for embracing dialogue and compromise, describing consensus-building as a healthy political culture. He urged APC stakeholders to continue consultations at the ward level and ensure inclusiveness in the party’s internal processes.

Egbo disclosed that five leaders were invited from each of the eleven wards, bringing the total number of stakeholders to 55, with near-full attendance recorded. He stressed that the gathering was strictly consultative and not a substitute for the formal congress, which he said would still be conducted in line with party guidelines.
Outgoing Chairman of the APC in Ughelli North, Hon. Samuel Evwighono, described the meeting as a clear signal of unity and shared purpose within the party. He said the atmosphere was peaceful and cordial, adding that he was not aware of any unresolved grievances among members. Evwighono advised the incoming leadership to prioritise reconciliation, noting that unity remains the backbone of any successful political party.
Also speaking, Engr. Christabel Obiuwevbi and Olorogun Alice Ikpen welcomed the outcome of the meeting, pointing out that each ward was represented by at least one woman. They described the development as a positive step towards inclusive leadership within the APC.
Notably absent from the meeting was the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 general election and former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. He was neither represented nor mentioned during the endorsement process and has remained mute since the adoption of Lucky Ofomukoro as consensus chairman, a silence that has continued to generate quiet discussions within party circles.
Several prominent party leaders and stakeholders attended the meeting, including the member representing Ughelli North I in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Matthew Omonade; former House of Representatives member, Hon. Solomon Awhinawhi; Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative Matters, Hon. Charles Oniyere; former Secretary to the State Government, Rt. Hon. Festus Agas; Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon; Chairman of the Elders Committee, Prof. S.W.E. Ibodje; Olorogun Gladys Agba Ovie; Chief Simeon Owhofa; Hon. Sylvester Ovbije; Chairman of Delta SUBEB, Hon. Samuel Mariere; Hon. Kelly Oghenekevwe, among others.
With the emergence of Lucky Ofomukoro as consensus chairman, APC leaders in Ughelli North expressed confidence that the party is now firmly positioned for a peaceful congress and stronger internal cohesion ahead of future electoral contests.
