Udu Kingdom in Delta State, has been plunged into mourning following the passing of its revered monarch, His Royal Majesty Owhorhu I, Barr. Patrick Otete Delekpe, the Ovie of Udu Kingdom.
Announcing the passing on Wednesday, 16th April, 2025, the Otota of Udu Kingdom, High Chief Sam Odibo, declared a nine-day mourning period from April 17th to 25th, 2025. The declaration reflects the deep respect and affection the people held for the late monarch, who was known for his wisdom, humility, and dedication to the growth of Udu Kingdom.
One of the first to pay tribute to the departed king was Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, fondly known as ‘The People’s General’.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Chief Ogboru expressed his grief and described the monarch’s death as a great loss not only to Udu Kingdom but to the entire Urhobo nation.

“On behalf of my family, I wish to commiserate with the King’s family, the Udu Council of Chiefs, and the entire people of Udu Kingdom. The passing of a great king and accomplished scholar like HRM Owhorhu I has created a huge vacuum in leadership,” Ogboru said.
He praised the monarch for his simplicity, competence, and diligent leadership, noting that his contributions to the advancement of Udu Kingdom and the wider Urhobo nation will forever be remembered. Ogboru also prayed for the peaceful repose of the king’s soul and asked God to grant him eternal rest.
As the mourning period begins, the people of Udu and sympathizers from across Delta State and Nigeria at large reflect on the life and legacy of a monarch who served with distinction and left an indelible mark on his kingdom.
