The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has announced that both its Abuja location and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on January 19 in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The embassy stated: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day.”
This federal holiday commemorates the significant contributions of the late leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, who was assassinated while fighting for civil rights for African Americans.

Martin Luther King Jr. is well-known for his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered in Washington during the civil rights movement.
Born on January 15, 1929, King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee.
