Tyler Perry‘s latest film, “Straw,” has made a notable impact on audiences, receiving applaud on X (formerly Twitter) despite mixed reviews from critics.

The film is part of Perry’s ongoing collaboration with Netflix, where he serves as writer, director, and producer under a multi-year deal.

Viewer reactions highlight the film’s deep exploration of mental illness and the challenges faced by single black mothers.

@mimimobetapraised the performances of Teyana Taylor and Sherri Shepherd, emphasizing the compassion their characters bring to the story.

She said “Phenomenal movie that gives a serious glimpse into mental illness and things that single black mothers deal with on a daily basis.

“Also the compassion and empathy shown by Teyana Taylor and Sherri Sheppards characters that we are missing. Great job”.

@sayhiwithai noted the impressive fashion styles showcased in the film, particularly applauding the looks of Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd, and Teyana Taylor.

She said: “The styling in this shoot is everything! Taraja’s yellow moment, Sherri’s earth tones, and Teyana’s denim-on-denim perfection prove that when you put three fashion icons together, magic happens”.

Henson’s performance has garnered significant acclaim, with one viewer passionately advocating for her to receive an Oscar nomination, citing her powerful portrayal that evoked deep emotional responses.

@terridoll said “if Taraji P Henson don’t get a damn Oscar for this I will raise HELL! This girl acted her ass off in this movie.I cried so much watching this.

“Her ethic, ambition, poise,&resilience shown in this movie she needs the credit she doesn’t get! I’m so proud of her.

“And don’t even get me started on @TEYANATAYLOR !! SHE DID HER THING TO!! They both didn’t just play their part, they owned it. They worked hard to make sure you felt it & that’s what I love”

Many have celebrated how the film sheds light on the often-overlooked struggles of women, especially women of color, in society.

@Jabu_Macdolnald said “Grief drove her to insanity. All along, she was dealing with the death of her daughter. Taraji P. Henson embodied this character so well , the emotions felt so real. And the
ending is probably Tyler Perry’s best work so far”

@Shae930 said “These ladies are OUTSTANDING in this movie! People don’t like to admit that women, especially women of color, go through life not being seen or heard.

“Until these facts are acknowledged, nothing will change. I’m proud of Mr. Perry and this story. Show compassion & offer grace!”.

“Straw” has sparked meaningful conversations about grief, resilience, and the importance of visibility and recognition for these narratives.
