Two people were killed and another injured in a late-night shooting at South Carolina State University, prompting an immediate campus lockdown and the cancellation of Friday classes.
University officials confirmed that the incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday at the Hugine Suites student residential complex. Authorities said the campus was placed on lockdown shortly after reports of gunfire inside an apartment within the housing facility.
In a statement released overnight, the university said it had not yet confirmed the identities of the deceased victims or disclosed the condition of the injured person. Officials also did not indicate whether any suspect had been taken into custody as investigations continued.
Local law enforcement agencies were deployed to patrol the campus and surrounding areas, working alongside university security to secure the scene. Students were advised to remain indoors while officers conducted their investigation.
