United States President Donald Trump has warned that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” unless Iran reaches a deal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
However, Trump said that “something revolutionarily wonderful can happen” before his deadline of 20:00 EDT on Tuesday (00:00 GMT/01:00 BST on Wednesday) for Iran to reopen the key shipping channel.
Trump adds: “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have complete and total regime change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?
“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World.
“Forty-seven years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
Iran has made clear that whatever civilian infrastructure the US targets on Tuesday night, it will correspondingly target such infrastructure in the Gulf states.
Meanwhile the US has carried out new strikes on military targets on Kharg Island, Iran’s key oil export terminal.
