U.S. President Donald J. Trump has stirred widespread reactions online after issuing a strongly worded statement on Nigeria’s security situation, describing the country as facing a “total disaster” following reports of alleged coordinated attacks in Maiduguri.
In a post shared on social media, Trump claimed that multiple locations in Maiduguri, including a hospital, a major market and a post office, were hit in what he described as suicide bombings that led to the deaths of several civilians. The claims, which have not been independently verified at the time of filing this report, quickly gained traction across global media and political circles.
Trump used the alleged incident to criticise Nigeria’s leadership, arguing that such attacks point to deeper failures in governance and border control. He directed his remarks at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of being outside the country at a critical moment.
According to Trump, Tinubu’s reported presence in the United Kingdom on an official visit was inappropriate given the gravity of the situation. He called on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to urge the Nigerian leader to return home immediately.
The former U.S. president stressed that national leaders should remain within their countries during periods of crisis, working closely with security agencies and citizens. He added that decisive action, including tightening border security and confronting terrorist threats, should take precedence over diplomatic engagements abroad.

Trump’s remarks have since triggered a wave of mixed reactions, with some observers viewing his comments as an intervention in Nigeria’s internal affairs, while others say they reflect growing international concern about security challenges in the country.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the Nigerian presidency addressing Trump’s claims or the alleged attacks in Maiduguri.
