The army has repelled a coordinated night attack by insurgents in Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, killing more than 60 terrorists, including several top commanders.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at about 12:50 am, when terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram and ISWAP advanced on foot from the Duguri axis.

The insurgents, reportedly supported by multiple armed drones, attempted to breach the 68 Battalion’s main defensive position.

The movement of the attackers was swiftly detected by alert troops, who responded with heavy and sustained firepower.

In a coordinated response involving both ground forces and air support, the troops engaged the insurgents in a fierce battle, neutralising over 60 fighters, including some notorious field commanders.

The intensity of the counterattack forced the remaining insurgents into a disorganised retreat towards the Arege area.

Following the successful defence, troops have launched exploitation operations aimed at pursuing and eliminating fleeing terrorists.

Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets are also being deployed to monitor withdrawal routes and prevent any regrouping by the insurgents.

The army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist elements, assuring citizens of its continued dedication to protecting lives and property across the country.
