Tragedy struck at the Federal High Court in Benin City, Edo State, after a 52-year-old drug suspect, Titilayo Akindele, reportedly collapsed and died during court proceedings.
Akindele, who had been in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was standing trial over alleged involvement in the sale of “loud,” a potent strain of cannabis.
According to reports, the defendant had earlier been granted bail by the court but remained in NDLEA custody, raising concerns about compliance with judicial directives.
Sources familiar with the case said the deceased had repeatedly complained of deteriorating health while in detention and during court appearances.
She was said to have pleaded for access to medical treatment, with her family reportedly offering to cover the cost of her care.

However, these requests were allegedly not acted upon.
The situation took a tragic turn when Akindele collapsed in court during proceedings and was confirmed dead shortly after, throwing the courtroom into confusion.
The incident has reignited concerns over detainee welfare, particularly access to healthcare and the enforcement of bail conditions by law enforcement agencies.
Observers note that similar concerns were raised in 2023, when reports emerged of suspects allegedly being denied adequate medical attention while in custody, prompting calls for reforms in detention practices and improved oversight of security agencies.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding her death.
