A deadly explosion rocked a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegun Local Government Area of Niger State, on Sunday morning, leaving four people dead and several others injured. The tragic incident has plunged the local community into panic and raised questions about safety practices at mining operations.
The blast occurred as miners resumed work for the day. Though the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, community members suspect it may have resulted from the improper handling of explosive devices often used by mining companies in the area.
Local authorities are still working to determine the total number of casualties, with fears that the death toll could rise. Four bodies have been recovered so far, and injured victims have been rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Residents described the explosion as a terrifying experience. Adamu, a local resident, recounted the chaos: “The explosion was so loud that many people thought it came from the hydroelectric dam. Everyone fled into the bush for safety.”
Another witness attributed the explosion to operational negligence rather than criminal activity. “Mining companies here use explosives frequently. This looks like an accident during their operations, not an act of terrorism,” the resident explained.
