Kano State has been thrown into mourning after two children lost their lives in separate well incidents across Dawakin Tofa and Dala Local Government Areas.
Confirming the heartbreaking incidents, the spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf, said both accidents occurred within 24 hours. The first tragedy happened on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, around 8:53 a.m. in Kashirmo Village, Sarkakiya, Dawakin Tofa.
An eight-year-old girl, identified as Zara’u Muhammad, reportedly slipped and fell into a deep well. Despite desperate rescue efforts by residents, she drowned before help could arrive. “Before the arrival of our special rescue team, people in the area tried their best to pull her out but couldn’t due to the depth and high water level,” Yusuf said. He confirmed that the rescue team later recovered the girl’s body and handed it over to the village head, Abdullahi Garba.

In a similar tragedy, a six-year-old boy, Ahmad Abdurashid, died on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, after falling into a well at Dandishe Tsamiyar Goodluck in Dala Local Government Area. Yusuf explained that firefighters pulled the boy out unconscious, but he was later confirmed dead. His remains were handed over to his father, Abdurashid, of Dandishe Quarters.
The Director of the State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed deep sorrow over the incidents and urged parents to remain vigilant. He called on residents to cover open wells and avoid digging uncovered ones close to roads or residential areas.
The tragic deaths of Zara’u and Ahmad have renewed public concern over the growing number of child-related accidents involving open wells in northern communities. Safety advocates are now pressing for stronger community action and stricter local enforcement to prevent similar avoidable tragedies.
