Nasarawa State has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented the Nasarawa North Senatorial District under the Social Democratic Party. He died at the age of 52 in India after a prolonged illness.

A family member confirmed on Wednesday, December 31, that the lawmaker passed away in a hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical care. The confirmation was made public on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon during a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria.

The death of Senator Akwashiki has been widely described as a major blow to the political and social life of Nasarawa State, particularly to communities across Nasarawa North, where he built a strong reputation for effective representation and grassroots engagement.

Family sources described him as one of the most influential senators the district has produced, noting that his tenure was marked by a firm commitment to development and constituency projects that directly impacted local communities. He was also noted as the only senator from the district to have secured a second term in office, a feat seen as a reflection of his popularity and political strength.

Before his election to the Nigerian Senate in 2019, Akwashiki served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly. During his time at the state legislature, he rose through the ranks, first serving as Majority Leader before becoming Deputy Speaker, roles that further shaped his political profile.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Senator Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and returned for a second term following his re-election in the 2023 general elections.

His passing has cast a deep shadow over the political landscape of Nasarawa State, with colleagues, supporters, and constituents expected to pay tributes to a lawmaker many credit with leaving a lasting imprint on the district he served.
