The Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation has issued a stark warning about the severe mental health risks employees face due to toxic work environments.
In a press briefing on Monday in Enugu, the foundation’s Executive Director, Rev. Chukwudiebube Nwachukwu, shed light on how poor management and excessive pressure in the workplace are leading to alarming mental health issues among employees.
“Toxic workplaces are breeding grounds for stress, anxiety, and even depression,” Nwachukwu, a seasoned psychologist, explained. “Many employees struggle silently, trapped in environments where they feel unsupported, undervalued, and constantly at risk of burnout.”
Nwachukwu emphasized that toxic work conditions often stem from lack of leadership, inadequate support, and high-pressure atmospheres. He added that hostile interactions among colleagues, driven by envy and competition, create an environment of tension and conflict, making it difficult for employees to perform their jobs effectively.
According to Nwachukwu, frequent sanctions, public reprimands, and intimidation tactics leave employees fearful, suppressing their voices even when they hold crucial information that could benefit the company. This fear-driven culture not only stifles innovation but also cripples communication, preventing organizations from reaching their full potential.

“Fearful employees keep quiet to avoid backlash, and that can lead to massive losses in creativity, collaboration, and overall productivity,” he said.
However, Nwachukwu believes there is a solution. He urged employers and senior employees to focus on creating a balanced mental health environment where productivity and well-being go hand-in-hand. “When mental health is prioritized, workplaces become more positive, productive, and harmonious. It’s a win for both the employees and the company.”
The growing conversation around mental health in the workplace is crucial, as more organizations come to realize that a toxic environment can lead to far-reaching consequences, not just for individuals, but for the business as a whole.
