President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the decentralization of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) from its historic Zaria base to six additional campuses across the nation’s geopolitical zones. This initiative is poised to reshape the country’s aviation industry by expanding access to world-class training and fostering regional development.

This strategic expansion ensures NCAT’s presence in Zaria (North-West), Yola (North-East), Ilorin (North-Central), Akure (South-West), Osubi (South-South), and Ebonyi (South-East). By spreading these campuses across the country, the initiative promises to create an aviation training network that meets the demands of a growing industry while promoting inclusivity.

Zaria will retain its status as the flagship campus, drawing on its decades of expertise and infrastructure. Meanwhile, Yola’s new facility will address the training needs of the North-East, a region previously underserved in aviation education. Ilorin’s campus is expected to bridge the gap in the North-Central zone, while Akure will serve as a key training hub in the bustling South-West. Osubi in Delta State, strategically located in the oil-rich South-South, is anticipated to specialize in logistics and related aviation services. Ebonyi’s campus in the South-East signals the administration’s commitment to educational equity, bringing advanced aviation training closer to the region.

The benefits of this initiative are far-reaching. Decentralizing NCAT reduces logistical and financial barriers for students who previously had to travel long distances to Zaria. This move also ensures a broader talent pool by making aviation education accessible to students nationwide. The localized campuses will provide tailored training opportunities, potentially addressing region-specific aviation needs such as oil and gas logistics in the South-South and agricultural aviation in the North-East.

Industry stakeholders have lauded the initiative as a game-changer for Nigeria’s aviation sector, though some have called for careful planning to ensure all campuses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and qualified staff. With the right resources, this expansion could elevate Nigeria’s aviation standards to meet international benchmarks, fostering partnerships with global aviation bodies and creating advanced training programs.

President Tinubu’s bold strategy aligns with his administration’s broader goals of stimulating economic growth, creating jobs, and enhancing Nigeria’s standing in global aviation. By decentralizing aviation education, the government not only democratizes access to training but also sets the stage for the emergence of a new generation of aviation professionals who can drive innovation and excellence in the industry.

As the rollout begins, the focus will shift to curriculum development, infrastructure, and operational efficiency. This move is expected to generate significant economic activity in the host regions, attract investments, and boost local industries tied to aviation. The establishment of these campuses marks a pivotal moment for Nigerian aviation, promising to transform the sector into a globally competitive force.
