The Bayelsa State Government has confirmed that its 60-megawatt Independent Power Plant (IPP) is nearing completion, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expected to inaugurate the project.

Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku Obiyai, disclosed this on Tuesday, noting that although previous inauguration timelines were missed, the project has now reached its final stage.

She explained that all eight generating units of the gas-fired plant have been fully installed, while arrangements are underway to formally invite the President for commissioning.

According to Obiyai, the turbine is almost ready for operation, expressing optimism that the long-awaited project will soon come on stream to boost electricity supply in the state.

She said residents are eager to see the plant operational, adding that the government is taking careful steps to ensure all processes are properly concluded before inauguration.

At the project site, Site Manager Steve Bubagha confirmed that the facility is in its final phase, with engineers currently conducting detailed checks on completed installations.

He noted that while test runs have yet to begin, the team is focused on reviewing and tightening all components to ensure the plant meets operational standards ahead of commissioning.
Bubagha described the inauguration process as sensitive, stressing that the project team is proceeding cautiously to avoid premature declarations until all technical assessments are completed.

Findings indicate that the eight units of the gas-powered plant were manufactured by General Electric, underscoring the project’s technical capacity and international collaboration.

The 60MW IPP is expected to significantly improve power supply, support industrial growth, and enhance economic activities across Bayelsa State once operational.
