President Bola Tinubu has sent a letter to the Senate seeking approval for Abdullahi Ramat to serve as the chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s request during plenary on Tuesday, which marked the official return of senators from their annual recess.
The Senate had been on recess since July 24, a customary break that allows members to focus on their constituencies and personal affairs.

Originally scheduled to resume on September 23, the date was postponed to October 7, 2025, extending the recess by an additional two weeks.
Ramat’s nomination comes at a critical time for the power sector, which is grappling with various issues, including regulatory challenges, tariff changes, and gaps in electricity supply.
The Senate is expected to conduct a comprehensive screening of the nominee before his confirmation.
