President Bola Tinubu has formally sought the Senate’s confirmation for the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This request was conveyed through a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was presented during the plenary session on Tuesday.

The appointment comes in the wake of a unanimous approval by the National Council of State, which convened on October 9 to discuss various national matters, including personnel changes in key governmental positions.

Prof. Amupitan, currently serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration at the University of Jos, will succeed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC chairman concluded recently.

The transition aims to maintain the integrity and efficacy of the country’s electoral process as Nigeria prepares for the upcoming elections.

In his letter, President Tinubu highlighted that the confirmation aligns with Section 154, sub-Section 1 of the 1999 Constitution.

He expressed confidence in Prof. Amupitan’s capabilities and contributions to the commission, stating, “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).”

The president attached Prof. Amupitan’s comprehensive curriculum vitae to facilitate the Senate’s evaluation and reiterated his hope that the Senate would expedite the confirmation process, emphasizing the importance of timely governance.

“Please accept, distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration,” Tinubu concluded.

Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio acknowledged the request and referred it to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative review and necessary deliberations, signaling a collaborative approach to the confirmation process in the nation’s quest for robust electoral governance.
