President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a fresh wave of appointments to university governing councils and top academic positions, a move aimed at injecting new leadership and expertise into Nigeria’s higher education system.
In a key appointment, Mr. Chisom Obih joins the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, replacing a late council member. The President also named renowned journalism scholar, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Akinfeleye, a former Head of the Mass Communication Department at the University of Lagos, is celebrated for his pioneering work with Unilag Radio and Television. He previously served on the Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, and now succeeds Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, who has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State.
Another significant change comes at the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State, where Prof. Ibrahim Yakasai has been named the new Vice Chancellor. Yakasai, a retired Colonel and current Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano, boasts a rich academic and professional background. He holds a medical degree from Ahmadu Bello University and has pursued further studies in the UK and USA. His career includes serving as Director-General of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board and active involvement in numerous educational organizations.
