The late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, former Governor of old Abia State and ex-Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, was laid to rest on Friday in his hometown of Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. The burial attracted an array of dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and APC National Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, praised Dr. Onu as a selfless leader dedicated to Nigeria’s progress. He highlighted Onu’s role in uniting the nation and building the foundations of the All Progressives Congress (APC), showing his lasting impact on Nigerian politics. “The late Dr. Onu’s contributions to national unity and progress will always be remembered,” Tinubu noted.
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru also paid tribute, lauding Onu’s lifelong commitment to equity, justice, and development. “Through every role he held, Dr. Onu championed justice and unity, leaving a legacy that has shaped our communities,” Nwifuru said. He further described Onu’s contributions to infrastructure, healthcare, and education during his tenure as governor and emphasized his unwavering dedication to the ideals of progress and prosperity.

Nwifuru reflected on Onu’s legacy as a pioneer in science and technology at the national level, noting his role in advocating for innovation and policies that uplifted communities across Nigeria. “He wore the mantle of leadership with dignity, building bridges and inspiring future generations,” Nwifuru added, expressing regret that Onu did not live to see his dream of a more inclusive Igbo leadership in Nigeria.
Also present were Governors Alex Otti (Abia), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), and Peter Mbah (Enugu), as well as other prominent figures like former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi and representatives from Anambra and Imo states. The dignitaries’ presence underscored Onu’s far-reaching influence and the respect he garnered across political divides.
Dr. Onu, who passed away at 72, is remembered as a visionary leader and a tireless advocate for development, unity, and progress. His legacy, his supporters say, will continue to inspire future generations..
