President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and Nigerian football icon, Peter Rufai, who died at the age of 61. The President, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Rufai as a patriotic sportsman whose legacy will remain etched in the annals of Nigerian football.

Fondly known by fans as ‘Dodomayana’, Rufai was celebrated for his pivotal role in Nigeria’s golden era of football. President Tinubu recalled the goalkeeper’s outstanding contributions, particularly during the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia where Nigeria lifted the trophy, and the country’s historic debut at the FIFA World Cup in the USA later that same year. Rufai also stood tall between the posts during Nigeria’s campaign at the France ’98 World Cup, cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers.

Peter Rufai began his illustrious career with Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1980 before becoming one of the trailblazers of Nigerian footballers in Europe. His professional journey saw him play in Belgium, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands, where he consistently showcased excellence and brought pride to Nigeria on the global stage.

Beyond the pitch, the late goalkeeper remained committed to the growth of the sport in Nigeria. As a royal prince from the Idimu Royal House in Lagos, Rufai founded the Staruf Football Academy, a platform through which he mentored and nurtured young talents, passing on the discipline and passion that defined his career.

President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to Rufai’s family, the Nigerian football community, and fans across the country and the continent. He praised Rufai not only for his remarkable sporting achievements but also for his post-retirement dedication to youth development in sports.

“Peter Rufai was more than just a goalkeeper. He was a symbol of resilience, excellence, and patriotism. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the barriers he broke in African football,” the President stated.

As tributes continue to pour in, President Tinubu offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Rufai’s soul and for strength to all those mourning his loss. Nigeria, he said, has lost a hero, but the nation will forever remember the man who stood tall for the green and white on football’s biggest stages.
