President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of the Chief of Naval Operations, Musa Katagum, who passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president extended condolences to the late officer’s family, as well as to officers and men of the navy and the leadership of the Armed Forces.

“President Tinubu condoled with his family, officers and men of the Nigerian Navy, and the leadership of the Armed Forces over the loss,” the statement read.

The president described Rear Admiral Katagum’s death as a significant blow to the military and the nation, citing his vast experience and invaluable contributions to the Nigerian Navy and the Armed Forces as a whole.

During his distinguished career, the late senior officer held several strategic positions, including director of Presidential Communication, Command and Control Centre (PC4), and chief of naval intelligence.

He was appointed chief of naval operations in November 2025.

Tinubu praised the rear admiral for his courage, exemplary leadership, and dedication to mentoring younger officers, noting that his legacy would endure within the armed forces.

He also prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and comfort for his family, colleagues, and associates during the period of mourning.

Katagum died in Egypt, where he had been receiving medical treatment, and was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
