President Bola Tinubu on Friday, July 25, 2025, hosted members of the 1999 class of governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in what is widely seen as part of his ongoing strategic consultations with key political stakeholders across the country.
The former governors, who were part of Nigeria’s first set of democratically elected state executives following the return to civilian rule in 1999, were led to the State House by former Delta State, Governor, James Ibori.
Although specific details of the closed-door meeting were not made public at the time of filing this report, sources close to the Presidency suggest that the parley forms part of Tinubu’s broader efforts to consolidate political support ahead of critical national and party decisions.
The development was confirmed by the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, who shared the update via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday.

President Tinubu, who served as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, is a prominent member of the influential 1999 governors’ class that has continued to shape the trajectory of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic politics.
Political analysts have described the reunion as a significant signal of high-level behind-the-scenes coordination, especially as internal alignments within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continue to evolve ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting also comes at a time when President Tinubu is facing mounting pressure to recalibrate his administration’s political alliances and respond to simmering discontent in some parts of the country over economic and governance challenges.
