President Bola Tinubu has flagged-off the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Highway.
The project, expected to significantly improve socio-economic activity across the North, was launched on Sunday at Jere in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Speaking on behalf of the president, Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani described the highway as a critical artery connecting the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to over 12 states spanning the North Central, North West, and North East geopolitical zones.
Gov. Sani lamented the years of neglect the road had suffered, which had led to the loss of countless lives and impeded economic growth.
He noted that the highway is the busiest in Northern Nigeria and second only to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway nationwide.
“The reconstruction of this road will undoubtedly bring much-needed relief and development to our communities,” the governor said.
“It will create job opportunities and boost security, transforming the socio-economic and political landscape of our region.”
Gov. Sani recalled his efforts as a senator to push for the completion of the project, including mobilising fellow senators, organising town hall meetings, and engaging directly with President Tinubu.
“In response to the cries of our citizens and travelers enduring hardship on this dilapidated road, I visited our dear leader and President, Bola Tinubu, to brief him.
“Mr. President not only gave me a listening ear, he gave the minister of works marching orders to ensure the project takes off without delay,” the governor stated.
Also, the governor highlighted past challenges delaying the project, including security threats along the Kaduna-Abuja axis.
However, he said the situation has improved significantly thanks to the non-kinetic approach adopted by security agencies.
He praised the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, for coordinating efforts that have stabilized the route, allowing motorists to travel safely at all hours.
Gov. Sani further revealed that President Tinubu has ordered the acceleration of other key infrastructure projects, including the long-delayed Eastern and Western bypasses in Kaduna.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, assured Nigerians that the 700-kilometre highway will be completed within 14 months and built using concrete-reinforced pavement.
“The road will be of the same standard as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway,” Umahi said, adding that the project has been extended by 11 kilometres to connect the Kano section directly to the Aminu Kano International Airport.
He disclosed that following the termination of the initial contract with Julius Berger, the project has been re-awarded to a new contractor with a proven track record.
The minister also revealed plans for modern features along the highway, including a solar-powered lighting system and CCTV surveillance throughout the stretch.
According to Umahi, President Tinubu has approved the completion of sections 1 and 3 of the highway, totaling 118 kilometres at N252 billion.
He confirmed that 30 percent of the funds have already been paid to the contractor.
The works minister lauded Gov. Sani’s dedication to the project, describing him as “a smart governor who has united the people of Kaduna behind the president and the APC.”
