President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to embark on a high-profile international tour that could shape Nigeria’s economic future. The President will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, making an initial stop in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before heading to Japan for the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.

Themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” TICAD9 will gather world leaders, top executives, and policymakers to craft strategies for Africa’s economic transformation. The focus will be on driving private investment, fostering innovation, and strengthening institutions to create a resilient, secure, and sustainable African society.

President Tinubu’s schedule in Japan includes attending high-level plenary sessions, holding bilateral talks, and meeting with CEOs of Japanese corporations already invested in Nigeria’s economy. His mission: to attract more foreign investment, expand trade opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria’s global economic partnerships.

TICAD, launched by the Japanese government in 1993 and co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, remains one of the most important platforms for Africa’s engagement with global partners. The last conference took place in Tunisia in August 2022, and this year’s edition promises even greater momentum for African nations seeking economic transformation.

Once the Japanese leg of the tour concludes, President Tinubu will fly to Brasilia, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from Sunday, August 24, to Monday, August 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The trip will feature a bilateral meeting between the two leaders and a major business forum aimed at deepening economic ties between Nigeria and Brazil.

The President’s delegation, which includes key ministers and senior government officials, is expected to finalize agreements and sign multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to boost trade, investment, and diplomatic cooperation between the two nations.

With back-to-back meetings with global business leaders and policymakers, Tinubu’s twin visits to Japan and Brazil are being seen as a strategic push to position Nigeria as Africa’s economic powerhouse in an increasingly interconnected world.
