President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja, following the sudden resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

The brief ceremony, held around 4 p.m. in the President’s office, was attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and other senior government officials.

Disu’s elevation comes less than two months before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he is expected to attain the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, under the amended Police Act which provides a four-year tenure for Inspectors-General of Police irrespective of age or years of service, he is eligible to remain in office until 2030.

His exit followed mounting controversies over his extended stay in office beyond the statutory retirement age, a development that drew criticism from civil society groups and sparked debate over adherence to service rules within the Nigeria Police Force.

Sources within the police hierarchy disclosed that at least 29 senior officers, including Deputy Inspectors-General and Assistant Inspectors-General, are expected to exit the force in the wake of the leadership change.

Egbetokun’s tenure was dogged by allegations of favouritism, questionable promotions and financial impropriety, claims that generated public scrutiny and legal disputes during his time in office.

With Disu now at the helm, attention has shifted to how the new police chief will stabilise the force and address lingering concerns over discipline, internal reforms and public trust in the nation’s law enforcement architecture.
