Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the construction of the ₦334 billion Kano–Kongolom road project, a major infrastructure development expected to boost economic activities across north-western Nigeria.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State described the approval as a “historic breakthrough,” saying the project will significantly improve transportation, trade, and regional connectivity.
The project involves the construction of a 132-kilometre three-lane concrete carriageway linking Kano with neighbouring Jigawa State and Katsina State, forming a key economic corridor in the North-West.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa.
According to the state government, the road will be equipped with solar-powered street lights and CCTV surveillance systems, a move aimed at enhancing road safety and improving security along the route.

The Kano–Kongolom corridor is considered a strategic transport link connecting agricultural communities and commercial centres in the region. The route serves as a gateway for the movement of farm produce, industrial goods, and traders between several northern states.
Governor Yusuf said the road project would open new economic opportunities for farmers, traders, and transporters by reducing travel time and improving logistics.
“This project will open new economic frontiers for farmers, traders, and transporters, reducing travel time and improving safety,” the governor said.
The Kano State government said the project is expected to stimulate agricultural production and industrial growth while creating employment opportunities during and after construction.
Yusuf noted that improved road infrastructure would strengthen Kano’s role as a major commercial hub in northern Nigeria and facilitate easier access to markets for rural producers.
He also praised the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for prioritising the project and supporting its approval.
The governor assured that the Kano State government would cooperate fully with contractors and federal authorities to ensure the project is executed smoothly and completed on schedule.
He expressed optimism that the initiative aligns with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while also supporting the state government’s development blueprint.
“This is the result of our Kano First Agenda working in harmony with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Yusuf said.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to projects that improve infrastructure and raise the living standards of residents across the state.
Observers say the project could significantly improve mobility and economic integration in north-western Nigeria if completed on time, given the importance of the corridor to regional trade and agriculture.
