The Chief Executive Officer and founder of Maya Tennis Academy, Nasarawa State, Hassan Usman Abubakar, has described tennis as more than just a competitive sport, calling it a powerful tool for youth empowerment.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Trumpet at the Abuja National Stadium, Abubakar highlighted how tennis has transformed the lives of young players under his academy. He noted that beyond the physical and competitive aspects, the sport has provided numerous opportunities, including scholarships, sponsorships, and career advancements in fields such as entrepreneurship and agriculture. He proudly revealed that several players nurtured by the academy have secured international scholarships and are currently competing at professional levels in different countries.

Abubakar urged the National Sports Commission to increase its support for the Tennis Federation, stressing that a stronger backing for the sport could help reduce youth unemployment in Nigeria. He emphasized that many talented young Nigerians are struggling due to a lack of opportunities, and tennis could serve as a pathway to a brighter future.
Maya Tennis Academy has organized several high-profile tournaments, serving as a launchpad for many players who have been scouted by international professional tennis clubs. Some notable competitions hosted by the academy include the Lafia Tennis Open (January 1–6, 2021), the Nasarawa Investment Tennis Competition (March 2–7, 2022), and the A.A. Sule Novelty Tennis Competition (February 3–8, 2025). With more thrilling tournaments on the horizon, the academy remains committed to discovering and nurturing young talents.
