Technical SEO: Why your website needs HTTPS, Site Maps, Schema Markup to rank higher in Google

We live in a fast-paced digital landscape where websites that ignore technical SEO risk more than just lower rankings — they could be putting users at risk and losing valuable traffic. From HTTPS encryption to schema markup, a recent expert walkthrough has laid out the essential elements every website owner must implement to stay relevant, secure, and optimized.

Why HTTPS Matters More Than Ever

One of the most noticeable signs of a secure website today is the padlock symbol visible in the browser’s address bar. This symbol indicates that a website uses HTTPS — short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure — instead of the older and now discouraged HTTP.

Unlike HTTP, which transmits data in plain text, HTTPS encrypts data using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security). This encryption makes it extremely difficult for hackers to intercept and decipher sensitive data, such as login credentials or personal information.

“If you’re not using HTTPS to secure your website, it’s time to talk to your hosting company,” the expert advised. “Most hosts can install an SSL certificate and redirect your traffic with minimal effort.”

How to Switch to HTTPS

Switching from HTTP to HTTPS is simpler than it seems. Website owners only need to request an SSL certificate from their hosting provider. Once installed, the website’s traffic is automatically redirected from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS version — protecting users and increasing trustworthiness in the eyes of Google. However in most installation HTTPS is automatically part of most host services.

Beyond HTTPS: Key Technical SEO Fixes Every Site Needs

But HTTPS is just the beginning. The expert guide also covered a suite of technical SEO must-haves that can dramatically improve website performance and search visibility.

1. Google Search Console Setup
Setting up Google Search Console allows site owners to monitor indexing issues, search performance, and security alerts. It’s a critical first step in understanding how Google views your site.
2. Google Analytics Integration
Google Analytics provides key insights into user behavior, traffic sources, and content performance — all of which help guide content and marketing decisions.
3. Creating a Site Map
A site map tells search engines how to crawl your website. Without one, many valuable pages might remain hidden from Google’s index.
4. Handling Duplicate Content, 404 Errors, and 301 Redirects
Ignoring duplicate content can result in search penalties. Meanwhile, 404 error pages (page not found) disrupt user experience, and 301 redirects are vital when moving pages or switching domains to preserve SEO juice.
5. Keyword Cannibalization Diagnosis
One major pitfall in SEO is keyword cannibalization, where multiple pages compete for the same keyword — ultimately harming rankings. Diagnosing and consolidating these pages can boost your visibility.
6. Schema Markup Implementation
Finally, Schema markup is a powerful tool for standing out in search results. Adding structured data helps search engines better understand your content, making features like rich snippets and FAQs more likely to appear.
“I’m going to show you exactly how to add schema markup to your site in a live walkthrough,” the expert promised — emphasizing the importance of hands-on implementation.

Technical SEO No Longer Optional

From secure connections to structured data, these technical SEO elements are not just best practices — they are essential for any serious website. With Google constantly updating its algorithm and users demanding faster, safer, and more informative browsing experiences, now is the time for site owners to get their hands dirty and optimize where it truly matters.
