Team Delta has once again proven its dominance on the national stage, emerging as the undisputed champions of the 22nd National Sports Festival; Gateway Games Ogun 2024. With an overwhelming lead of 109 gold, 75 silver, and 87 bronze medals as of the morning of May 29, Delta’s supremacy in Nigeria’s sporting landscape remains unchallenged, even as a handful of events await conclusion during Thursday’s grand closing ceremony.

This emphatic victory has been officially dedicated to the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in celebration of his second anniversary in office. According to Honourable Onoriode Oborevwori, Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, the win is a reflection of the governor’s unwavering support for youth development and sports excellence through his transformative MORE Agenda.

In his words, “This victory is for His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, whose consistent investment in the empowerment of young people through sports has made this moment possible. Even though a few events remain, our dominant performance confirms Team Delta’s position as number one.”

Delta’s medal haul leaves other top contenders trailing behind, Bayelsa with 80 golds, Ogun with 69, Rivers with 65, and Edo with 55. While the final medal table will be confirmed by the Main Organising Committee (MOC) after the closing events, Delta’s commanding advantage ensures it retains the overall title in what has become a showcase of sustained sporting excellence.

Hon. Oborevwori commended the athletes, coaches, and entire Team Delta delegation, emphasizing that the victory is not just about medal counts but a testament to the state’s strategic investment in its youth. “This is the result of years of hard work, discipline, and visionary leadership,” he stated. “The MORE Agenda has opened doors and inspired our youth to thrive in sports and beyond.”

The MORE Agenda- Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security, has been the backbone of Governor Oborevwori’s administration and a driving force behind Delta’s sports development strategy.

The Sports Commission chairman also applauded the tireless efforts of technical officials, administrators, and support staff whose contributions behind the scenes were instrumental to the team’s success. “We will receive this championship trophy with pride and gratitude, knowing it represents the hopes and aspirations of a new generation of champions,” he added.

Delta’s stunning performance at Gateway Games Ogun 2024 not only reinforces its title as the home of champions but also underscores the state’s blueprint for sustainable youth empowerment through sports. As the curtain falls on this year’s National Sports Festival, one thing is clear Delta State continues to set the pace, define the standard, and raise the bar for sports excellence in Nigeria.
