Residents of Taraba State have been called upon to report violations of their right to freedom of religion or belief, as part of renewed efforts to protect human rights and foster peaceful coexistence.
The appeal was made in Jalingo, during the screening of ‘Bridging the Abyss’, a documentary highlighting the importance of promoting and protecting freedom of religion or belief.
Held at the Shield Hotel in Jalingo metropolis, the event drew students from various tertiary institutions across the state.
It was organised by the Search for Common Ground (SFCG) with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking at the screening, SFCG’s Senior Media Officer, Katlong Dasat, described freedom of religion or belief as a fundamental human right protected under international law.
“Millions of people around the world still suffer discrimination, harassment, and violence because of their religious beliefs,” Dasat said.
Project Manager at SFCG, Gaius Dachet, stressed that religious freedom is crucial not only as a religious issue but also for peace, security, and sustainable development.
He noted that safeguarding these rights could help prevent conflicts in Taraba State and across Nigeria.
Participants at the event were urged to report any infringements of their religious rights and were provided with a toll-free helpline, 0800-000-2233, for confidential reporting of cases involving discrimination or persecution based on religious beliefs.
“If you are facing discrimination or violations of your beliefs, call the toll-free line. It is confidential and free,” Dasat assured the audience.
Several students and other attendees interviewed expressed appreciation for the initiative and pledged to share the information with their peers and communities.
Panelists at the event also urged participants to actively disseminate information about religious freedom and to promote tolerance within their respective environments.
