The Convener of the recently concluded Taraba State Chess tournament, Dankema Umar, has called on the state government to integrate chess into the school curriculum, citing its potential to enhance students’ cognitive and problem-solving skills.
Speaking during the tournament in Jalingo, the state capital, Umar highlighted the educational and developmental benefits of chess, pointing to its adoption as a learning tool in other parts of the world.
He emphasised that introducing chess into the school curriculum can significantly improve students’ critical thinking, decision-making, and academic performance, while also promoting the growth of the sport in the state and beyond.
“The integration of chess in schools aligns with global trends where the game is recognised as a vital tool for fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills,” Umar said.
He urged the state government to take proactive steps to include chess as part of a broader educational reform.

Umar expressed concern about the limited recognition of chess in Taraba State but revealed plans to partner with the government and corporate organizations to popularize the game.
He drew inspiration from the recent achievement of Tunde Onakoya, whose record-breaking performance at an international chess event earned him a place in the Guinness World Records.
“This is proof that chess can bring global recognition and inspire young talents within our state,” Umar said, expressing the hope that similar success stories can emerge from Taraba State.
Participants at the tournament commended Umar for his efforts to develop the state’s youth through sports.
They urged other citizens to support sports development in the state and invest in initiatives that can create lasting impact among the youth.
With Umar’s advocacy and continued efforts, players and enthusiasts believe chess could become a widely accepted and accessible sport in Taraba State, paving the way for future champions and elevating the state’s profile on national and international platforms.
