As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1, the Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for renewed commitment to national unity, justice, and responsible leadership.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Jalingo, the state Chairman of CAN, Rev. Fr. Williams Awoshiri, reflected on the country’s six-and-a-half-decade journey, acknowledging both the hardships and the resilience that have defined Nigeria since 1960.
“Sixty-five years after independence, our nation has faced trials, but we have also demonstrated resilience and faith,” the statement read.
“This is a moment for Nigerians to recommit to the ideals of unity, justice, peace, and good governance.”
The association urged citizens to remain prayerful and actively involved in the task of nation-building, emphasizing that progress requires the collective effort of all Nigerians.
Addressing those in positions of authority, CAN Taraba issued a strong appeal for integrity and inclusiveness in governance.

Rev. Awoshiri encouraged leaders across all levels, from the Presidency to the grassroots, to govern with sincerity and a sense of sacred responsibility.
“We urge leaders to deliver governance that uplifts every citizen, regardless of religion, tribe, or political affiliation,” he said.
Quoting Psalm 33:12, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,” Rev. Awoshiri underscored the importance of rooting Nigeria’s future in godly values and moral leadership.
He concluded the message with a prayer for divine guidance for the nation’s leaders and expressed hope that the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s founding fathers would continue to inspire the country toward a brighter, more united future.
